Alaska Airlines Credit Card

Alaska Airlines Visa transaction fee?
I’m not a credit card whiz, but in the Terms & Conditions it says this:
“Transaction fee for Purchases: Transaction fee for the purchase of wire transfers from a non-financial institution: 5% of each such transaction (minimum $15). ”
Does that mean they’ll charge me a fee for every purchase I make with the card?
I’m asking because most credit cards don’t have transaction fees, and it seems weird that such a high-profile bank (BoA) would do that.
Those transaction fees are for getting cash and cash equivilents (traveller’s checks, etc).
For regular purchases – food at the gorcery store, gas at the gas pump, paying your cell phone cill – the merchant pays the transaction fee. For the merchant, it ranges from 1.5 to 3 or 4% depending on their volume and average transaction size. But you don’t pay it. The store pays it as a cost of doing business. They’ve decided the additional market of credit-card holders is worth it.
You’ll pay, I think, $75 per year on that Alaska Airlines VIsa account. That’s it. If you pay your bills in full each month. For that fee, you’ve got the convenience of using a credit card (mail order, eCommerce, cashless transactions, etc) AND you accrue miles for free travel. And that companion fare voucher which lets someone fly with you for pretty dang cheap – $50+taxes = about $100 for a round trip that might have been $600 or $1000 to purchase normally.
You don’t have to be a credit card whiz. These cards with mileage benefits are a good deal, Alaska Airlines is one of the better programs out there. Just don’t spend money you don’t have and pay off your bill IN FULL, EVERY MONTH. Then you are basically transfering that merchant transcation fee into your pocket in the form of those miles for award travel. Worth about 2% on all purchases you make.
