I did a 4 week road trip around the west coast of the states during my gap year and it was the most expensive part.

For hotels look out coupon books (often at Dennys/McDs or at rest stops near state lines) these basically give you a discount on a room in a walk in basis. Also look at Roomsaver.com for similar thing. Hotels will set you back anything from $25 to $95 depending on the type of place you want. Motel 6′s are generally cheap around $50/60 pn and are fine. Alternatively you could always camp (which is what I did) and you can get camp sites for $10.

Car hire would be a few hundred $, really can’t remember how much we paid as it was a few years back.

Food, you would be looking at about $12-15 for brekkie, $10 for a lunch (Subway or Arbys) and anything up to $60 for dinner depending on how many courses and beer you consume.

Entrance fees to National Parks are generally per vehicle and can be anything up to $25.
